JDS Uniphase, a world leader in optical technology, was formed in 1999 with the merger of JDS Fitel (known for its passive optical components) and Uniphase Corporation (known for its active components and lasers). The company grew rapidly to meet the high market demand for fiber optic technology, leading the fiber optics component industry by offering the broadest portfolio of products and achieving revenues at the height of the telecommunications boom of over $1B per quarter. Although its innovative technology provided solutions in laser, optics and display, decorative, and brand authentication markets, the JDS Uniphase brand became best known for fiber optic communications components.
